We know parents play a crucial role in literacy development. Your child will learn best when they read with someone, even if you listen to the story together. Not everyone is an avid reader and that’s ok. Listen to follow along books early in the morning before school, instead of television.

Your child can listen to the narrator talking while they try to follow along on the page. This is good for your child even if they cannot read yet. Listen to a follow-along book in the car and talk while your child follows the story in the book.

At the end of the story, you can ask your child questions about the story. You can also read follow along books at night before bed. They make for a great, interactive bedtime story.

You can also guide your child to turn the page as you follow along. Having a simple conversation about the story will help early readers develop a more complete understanding of the story.
